A 45-year-old man died in a hit and run collision - now an investigation has been launched

A police watchdog is investigating after a pedestrian died in a hit and run collision following a chase by two police cars through Birmingham.

The 45-year-old man died at the scene of the collision on Belgrave Middleway in Edgbaston at around 11.40pm on Sunday night after he was struck by a dark coloured Ford Mondeo.

The man was struck along the west bound carriageway of the road and police are searching for the driver.

The Mondeo car was being pursued for six miles from Short Heath Road in Erdington after the driver failed to stop for police.

Paramedics were called to assist but nothing could be done to save the man and he died at the scene. Specialist officers are supporting his family.

West Midlands Police say the pursuit was started by response officers but was then continued by specialist traffic officers. It was abandoned when the car went through a red light shortly before the collision occurred.

The Mondeo fled the scene and police are still searching for the driver. Police are urging him to give himself up.

A police helicopter was deployed to try and trace the driver of the Ford Mondeo but the man hasn’t been traced and no arrests have been made.

Belgrave Middleway was closed between Haden Circus and Pershore Road while the incident was dealt with and reopened shortly after 12pm on Monday.

Resident Lynvar Wooley, aged 56, who lives near the scene of the collision, described the aftermath.

He said: “I got up at just after midnight to make myself a cup of tea. I could see the blue flashing lights from window. I looked outside and saw lots of police cars and ambulances.

“There were paramedics and police crowding around someone lying on floor where the blue tent is now. I later heard a man had died. It is tragic.”

Representatives from police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission were at the scene as an investigation into the incident began.

The two police cars involved in the chase were towed away and will be part of the investigation.
